Daniel Carney was born 1954 in Cambridgeshire, England and raised in Baltimore, Maryland.  He studied with composer and pianist Morris Cotel at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.
In the early 80's, under the patronage of Washington inventor and lawyer Arnold Berkeley, he and fellow composer Alec Bernstein developed an ensemble of robotic performers on piano, vibraphone, marimba, drums, electric guitar and bass.  Carney performed extensively with this ensemble while living in New York and Amsterdam in the 80's and 90's.
Since returning to Baltimore in 1996, he has built a small concert hall (Carriage House) in the Charles Village neighborhood, and is currently composing chamber works for non-robotic performers .
